    What is aTeagle?

    Terrier x Beagle

The Teagle is a cross between a terrier and hound, the most popular matings practiced is the

    1. Lakeland x Beagle

There were other very successfull matings such as the

    1. Wheaten x Beagle
    2. Border x Beagle
    3. Irish x Beagle
    4. Kerry Blue x Beagle
    5. Jack Russell x Beagle

There were quite a few other breeds and all produced excellent little dogs.

It must be noted that the Teagle hunting dog has been around since the early 1800's, this is not a new trend type breed that was brought about by american actors and entertainers, with their pet little pet mixes etc, No, the Teagle has been around for hundreds of years in Ireland, it was a much sort after little hunting dog by game keepers, land owners, poachers and in general hunt enthusiasts.

There were three well known kennels in Ireland, Kildare, Tipperary and Cork, there was also a land owner in Dublin who bred some of the finest looking hunt terriers Border x Beagle, amazing little dogs, but a majority of the matings were Lakeland x Beagle, producing some excellent hunting dogs, all very uniform in type, all were used on your typical european game such as rabbit, hare, fox, otter, rats with great success.

The Teagle is also used in the USA as a treeing dog, there are a number of kennels in the USA that have had excellent results treeing Squirrel and Coon with these little dogs, in fact one kennel in particular in the deep south, has a super little dog, a consistant winning dog at treeing compertition and is reffered to as a Treeing Feist, the truth is, the dog is a Treeing Teagle, producing puppies very uniform type.

The cross was made the incorporate the hard grittiness of the terrier, with in mind to keep the small size, and also introducing the mellow kind temperament and gentle disposition of the beagle, which produced a dog that could be housed and hunt a long side other dogs with no fighting etc, the Teagle was also allot less hot headed than that of a pure terrier which in many cases made for a more pleasant hunt experience, ironically enough the Teagle didn't inherit the on the run (chop) barking from the beagle, but rather a much more silent hunting dog.

What really strikes me as being strange, is that, we all know how hard it can be to brake, call off or even try to control a terrier, once it has picked up a sent or sight of an animal, the same for the beagle, once they have picked up a strong sent it is next to impossible to brake them, as the saying goes two wrongs don't make a right but in the case of the Teagle, they are very intelligent, fast and extremely easy to control and have an excellent nose, the Teagle makes an excellent bushing dogs, they will also go to ground, a big plus for the woodsmen and hunters who like good earth dogs is that the Teagle inherited a thicker tail from the beagle blood, making it much more easier to hold on to and pull when needed.

To sum up the Teagle, it is fair to say that it is a more of a controllable terrier type hunting dog, extremely intelligent, super versitile little dog.
