    The Stephens Cur

The Stephens Cur, also known as the Stephens Stock Cur, was originally bred a scent hound that also belonged with the other Cur breeds. They were originally bred by the Stephens' family in southeastern Kentucky. Black and white dogs known as "Little Darkies" the Stephens' family bred this little dog for generations, in fact they bred them for over a century.

In 1970 the Stephens cur had gained a big following in the deep south and was recognized as separate and distinct breed of Cur, a big achievement to have one particular breed or type of cur recognized when there were so many other different breed types of cur.

The dog were mostly black with white markings, but more than a third of the white is not permissible. the breed are good for hunting raccoon and squirrel, but can also be used to bay wild boars. The Stephens Cur are registered with the United Kennel Club, and the Continental Kennel Club.

The standard requires that the dogs to be between 16–23 inches at the withers (41–58 cm) in height and no heavier than 55 pounds in weight (25 kg)

    Parnell's Carolina Curs

The Stephens Cur is also responsible for producing a great little Squirrel hunting dog known as the Parnell's Carolina Cur, produced by James Parnell of Hartsville, South Carolina, a great little dog that came about by putting together a Stephens Cur female named "Kate" and a super little bobtailed Mountain Feist by the name of "Pee Wee", the offspring from this mating were said to have lots of drive, easy to handle and have a real good disposition.

Mr Parnell's intention I believe was to produce a much smaller type of cur, a specialty type cur that was more suited for squirrel hunting, hence the Cur Feist combination which have become an extremely popular and successful breed of cur. I personally don't know Mr Parnell or have I ever had a conversation with the man but there are enough true dedicated cur enthusiasts out there that do know the man, his dogs and achievements, breeders of integrity, thank God there are still good men of integrity, keeping it right and in the woods.
