    Coyote Decoy Dog Breeds

The use of coyote decoy dogs is still very much in its infancy stage when you compared to other types of hunting, even though there are a number of dedicated predator callers that have covered quite a bit of ground on the subject of using decoy dogs especially when calling Coyotes.

The types of dogs used for decoy are predominately cur dogs and cur cross, which are still considered a cur but you can use any breed of dog, there are bunch of good versatile breeds out there that would suit this job just fine, it's really down to the individuals personal preference.

A few things to keep in mind when looking for a or purchasing a decoy dog, first of all, it's an absolute must that you choose a breed that is easy to train, to go with a dog that has a super high prey drive, your going to find yourself swimming up stream, going back instead of forward.

What your going to find is that most of the terrier breeds have a high prey drive with some breeds higher than others and completely out of control, for terrier lovers, it's not a complete wash because every breed of dog is trainable, just some breeds are a little easier, but if your a terrier person and want a terrier, I would personally go with a terrier cross, not (terrier x terrier), but more like (terrier x cur) or (terrier x hound) for the hunters that don't like the terrier breed a good cur dog would be the perfect choice, or if your a hunter that likes to experment and mix it up a bit, again a good cur dog would be a perfect place to start.

You are also looking for a breed that has a enough grit and can work all day, again I would have to go back to the tried and tested hunting dogs of the Appalachians and the deep south, the pioneers cur dog which come in many different types and bloodlines, it doesn't matter what your hunting preference is, you can guarantee there is a cur dog suited for every need.

Your looking for a nice size dog, nothing to big or that would presents it’s self as being intimidating to the coyote, a good size dog would be equal to a coyote but much stronger, you don't really want a dog that is under 40 lb or not to much over 50 lb.
